New research showing that combination of manufactured wood products and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage can play a critical role in climate neutrality

A new research study “Cascading wood use into bioenergy with carbon capture and storage ensures continuous and enduring temperature reduction” has recently been published in the Nature journal Communications Earth and Environment, and is available open access (https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-026-03333-1).

Bangor University has just issued a news item on this (https://www.bangor.ac.uk/news/2026-03-30-new-research-shows-smarter-use-of-wood-can-help-cool-the-planet).

Using rigorous Life Cycle Assessment, the research shows that using harvested wood to manufacture products such as particleboard, before cascading into combustion for bioenergy with carbon capture and storage at the end of the products’ life, will achieve greater greenhouse gas removal from the atmosphere (and thus global cooling) than either immediate combustion with BECCS or leaving forests unharvested.
